Why Metal Pools Rust
Metal or galvanized steel pools are often chosen as a cost-effective solution for pool construction. However, behind the initial low investment lies a series of critical issues that can compromise both the durability and safety of the entire structure.
The Nature of the Problem
The walls of such pools are made of galvanized steel panels, sometimes coated with PVC or resin for added protection. Despite these layers, the anti-corrosive coating deteriorates during manufacturing, transportation, and installation.
Every cut, drill, or rivet made in the panels removes the protective zinc coating, exposing bare metal to soil and moisture. These areas quickly become the starting points of oxidation and rust, which gradually spread throughout the structure.
Moreover, impacts and scratches during handling and backfilling further accelerate corrosion. Over time, this leads to a weakening of the structure and, in severe cases, the complete collapse of the pool walls.
Electrolytic Corrosion & Environmental Factors
Another major issue is electrolytic (galvanic) corrosion — a process that occurs when the metal is in constant contact with humid or conductive soil.
The risk increases dramatically in pools that use salt electrolysis systems, as the saltwater can penetrate between the liner and the steel walls, leading to rapid oxidation and structural failure.
Such damage often goes unnoticed until it’s too late, as minor leaks around fittings or poorly installed liners allow saltwater to reach the steel core.
Warranties and What They Really Cover
In the market, there are metal swimming pools offered with multi-year factory warranties. In practice, however, these warranties are often verbal, or when provided in written form, their validity depends on the strict compliance with the manufacturer’s terms of use and maintenance. Moreover, most of them do not cover restoration costs or any construction works required in the event of structural failure or damage.
In cases where corrosion or wall collapse occurs, replacement cannot be limited to the panels alone. It usually requires the complete dismantling and reconstruction of the entire pool, including all related materials, fittings, and labor, as the tank must be fully removed and reinstalled.
For your peace of mind, always request written warranties that explicitly cover 100% of the materials, structure, and labor for the entire warranty period — not just the cost of the steel panels.
The Aegean Pools Perspective
At Aegean Pools, we believe in transparent, technical guidance. Our mission is to inform every client about the true long-term risks of metal pools and to offer safer, more advanced alternatives such as the THERMAL BLOK system.
The THERMAL BLOK pool is a fully non-corrosive, insulated, and structurally reinforced solution that adapts perfectly to all types of finishes — Liner, AEGEAN SLIM, or tiles — offering a long-lasting, watertight, and energy-efficient result.
